“Karl Mårtens has combined two totally different techniques in his paintings. He uses calligraphy brushes and watercolor on a very interesting, hand made paper. With a few, steady brushstrokes he depicts the bird’s shape and ‘personality’. But the result cannot be said to be naturalism. The calligraphic strokes and some splashes of watercolor give the images a slight abstraction, which allows for the viewer’s own experiences and interpretations.

The images have almost a portrait-like feeling, which is enhanced by the small, white reflections in the pupil of the eyes, giving the birds life.”
